How long does it will take me to become fluent in French?

The time it takes to become fluent in French depends on several factors, including your language learning environment and how much time you're able to dedicate to learning. Exposure is key when it comes to language learning. According to the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages), conversational fluency typically develops at the B2 level, which usually requires between 540-620 hours of deliberate practice. With consistent effort, this goal is achievable within 12-24 months, depending on your commitment and learning approach.

Should I learn French in a group or have individual lessons?

If speaking quickly and focusing on personalised learning are your priorities, individual lessons may be the best option. Lessons can be tailored to meet specific needs, such as preparing for an exam or a trip to France, and can target areas where you need improvement, like speaking, listening, or grammar. You'll progress at your own pace, exploring topics of interest in greater depth. Additionally, lessons can be scheduled at times that suit you best. However, if you're looking for a more social learning experience and prefer a structured environment, group lessons could be a great fit. In a group, you'll have the opportunity to practice with others, which can be motivating and help you improve your conversational skills in a more natural setting. Group lessons are also more affordable than private lessons.

What material should I buy or need for the lessons?

With The French Workshop, you will only need a pen and a notebook! For both group and private lessons, there's no need to purchase any specific materials, as everything is provided and included in the price. However, we’re always happy to recommend additional resources like apps, books, and websites that can help you practice between lessons.

I am an absolute beginner. What would you recommend to start with?

Everyone starts somewhere, and with The French Workshop, you have several great options to begin your language journey. You can choose to start with one of our online courses, such as the Intro/Travellers course or French for Beginners 1, or opt for private lessons tailored to your needs. If you’re unsure, you can start with group classes to experience a collaborative learning environment, and later switch to private lessons if you feel the need for more personalised attention. Whatever you choose, we are here to support you every step of the way!

Are the classes taught in French?

During each lesson, the teacher will use French as much as possible, but will also incorporate English for clarifications and explanations, particularly in the early stages (don’t worry, beginners!). As students build confidence, the amount of French used in class will gradually increase. At intermediate and advanced levels, French will be predominantly used.

Is it better to learn French online or in person?

Many students today find that online private lessons offer many of the same benefits as in-person lessons, with the added advantages of greater convenience and a more affordable cost. However, some people find that being physically present with a teacher allows for a more immersive experience. In the end, the choice between learning French in person or online remains a very personal one, depending on individual preferences, learning styles, and lifestyle.

How many hours/lessons per week should I book?

Most of our students choose to have 1 hour of lesson per week, which is the minimum we recommend, especially if you’re a beginner. However, the more lessons you have, the faster your progress will be. For faster learning, many students opt for 2 or more hours per week or even more intensive sessions.
